What is acne?


Whether you are a teenager or a middle-aged adult, these little monsters called acne don’t seem to want to leave you.

So what is acne really?


To be able to battle the enemy, one must learn everything they can about the army. Acne in its foremost cause is nothing but an infection caused by a type of bacteria called Proinobacteium acnes in the sebaceous glands of the skin. Hence the name!


This means the little pores on your skin are colonized by the bacteria which wreaks havoc causing inflammation. This inflammation manifests either in the form of pustules, bumps, nodules, or cysts.

Acne can affect anyone from the ages of 11-30 mostly. Although, some adults suffer from acne even after the age of 35.


Teenagers: Teenage Acne is caused mostly by the changes in hormones teenagers go through. With young girls and boys reaching puberty, rising levels of hormones increase the production of sebum and more dead skin cells. Sebum can be considered the main ingredient of what is referred to as the body’s “natural oils”. Family history also plays a huge role in teenage acne.


Adult acne: The biggest cause of hassle in one’s routine, adult acne. Adult acne persists for many years if not treated appropriately and in a timely manner. Some of the causes of adult acne could be:

  • External factors – Cosmetics, perfumes, allergies, food allergies, pollution, and humidity in the air could be some of the many external causes
  • Internal factors - hormonal imbalance, diet and nutrition, alcoholism, smoking can cause Acne in adults.
